Frank Norris published his first novel, Moran of the Lady Letty in 1898. This was followed by a couple of novels, McTeague: A Story of San Francisco (1899), A Man's Woman (1900) and The Octopus (1901). These were all novels of social protest.
Norris died in 1902 aged 32. He influenced a whole generation of novelists including Upton Sinclair, Floyd Dell, David Graham Phillips, Theodore Dreiser, Charles Edward Russell and Sinclair Lewis, all committed to writing "socialist" novels.
